Ames, IA - As the dust settles on the 2024-25 college football season, numerous players are finding themselves at a crossroads. Many are entering the transfer portal in search of new opportunities. Among them is JJ Kohl, a 6-foot-7 quarterback who faced a season of limited playing time and is now embarking on a fresh journey after departing from the Iowa State Cyclones.


JJ Kohl's story is one of ambition and determination. A blue-chip prospect upon entering college football, he carried high expectations. WITM Sports News met JJ Kohl back in 2021 at a 7v7 tournament we hosted, Kohl was all about the Cyclones, The Iowa native grew up a huge fan. Rightfully so and before arriving at Iowa State, Kohl's future looked bright. In high school, he earned several accolades, showcasing a strong arm and impressive poise in the pocket. He was recognized as one of the top quarterback recruits in the nation. Fans and analysts were excited to see how he would develop at Iowa State.


However, moving up to the college ranks often comes with hurdles. For Kohl, the depth chart at Iowa State proved to be a significant roadblock. He faced tough competition from established starters and talented peers for game time. In the 2023 season, he participated in three games, but he only had limited snaps and finished with 23 passing yards, completing 9 out of 11 attempts.


With the 2024 season coming to an end and minimal playing time, Kohl made the critical decision to enter the transfer portal. This choice has become increasingly common among college athletes looking for fresh starts in a competitive environment. The transfer portal can offer a much-needed chance for players like Kohl to showcase their abilities and find a program that aligns better with their athletic goals.
