COLORADO–The Mountain Vista Golden Eagles made the trek to Erie last Friday and handed the Tigers their worst loss in almost a decade. In fact, the last time a team put up more than 50 points on the Tigers was when Holy Family secured a 52-7 win in 2015 on Erie’s home turf. Leave it to South Dakota commit Austyn Modrzewski to lead Mountain Vista to a dominant win over the Tigers on Friday night with a record-breaking performance.

The Golden Eagles vs the Tigers
The Golden Eagles came out hot to start the game, working 80 yards down the field on a four-play drive that ended with a 40-yard touchdown connection between Modrzewski and sophomore wide receiver Brooklyn Bailey. That passing touchdown began the Golden Eagle’s onslaught on the Tigers through the air in the first half.
Mountain Vista scored 28 points in the first quarter and 20 more points in the second, while holding Erie to a single six-point score in the second quarter. With a 48-6 score minutes before halftime, the Golden Eagles accomplished something that few high school football fans in Colorado have seen in recent years, a running clock on the Erie Tigers.
The opening drive of the third quarter resulted in a rushing touchdown by senior running back Gavin Lusk, his second score of the night and final for the Tigers. The Golden Eagles scored the game's final points in the fourth quarter on a pass connection between Modrzewski and junior receiver Sammy Brown.
The Golden Quarterback
Modrzewski’s magnificent performance ended the night completing 19 of his 21 pass attempts for 362 yards and eight touchdowns to six different receivers. Through the season's first three games, the South Dakota commit has completed 58 of his 76 pass attempts for 989 yards and 18 touchdowns with a single interception.
Modrzewski's eight touchdowns tie him for fifth-most in a game while bringing his career total to 108, tying him for fourth in career passing touchdowns and just 22 away from tying the record. Modrzewski is averaging six touchdowns a game, putting him on pace to surpass the record of 130 touchdowns and cementing his legacy among the greatest passers in Colorado history.
Mountain Vista will travel to Aurora to take on Cherokee Trail this Friday, while Erie will take its bye week to regroup before hosting Fort Collins on Sept. 20th.
